During his address, Senator Ekpenyong, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, underscored the resolute determination of young parliamentarians worldwide to contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts. He emphasised the critical role of dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect in transcending barriers and fostering mutual understanding among nations and communities.

I have firsthand knowledge of the difficulties and sacrifices associated with achieving peace through dialogue”, he explained. “As the Chairman of the Senate Committee with oversight responsibilities over the Niger Delta Development Commission, the largest interventionist agency in Nigeria, my members and I have the task of building bridges for peace and development in the Niger Delta region. The region globally renowned for its rich, cultural heritage and abundant natural endowment, but is also unfortunately known for its long history of conflict and unrest”.

Drawing upon his extensive experience in addressing the intricate environmental and developmental challenges in the Niger Delta region, Senator Ekpenyong implored the international community to prioritise sustainable solutions and extend support to initiatives aimed at ameliorating the plight of affected populations.

Releasing a statement after the event, the Senator said he urged the assembly to “enact resolutions that would protect women and children, and non-combatants that bear the major brunt of the needless violence associated with war and conflict”. He also explained that he challenged the assembly not to relent in bringing lasting peace to the world by invoking the words of the late Kofi Annan, who said, "Peace is never a perfect achievement”.

Senator Ekpenyong's fervent plea garnered widespread support and recognition from attendees, affirming his unwavering dedication to peace-building efforts. His call for unity and solidarity in pursuing common goals garnered commendation from fellow parliamentarians and stakeholders.
