Police Arrest Teacher for Brutally Assaulting 11-Year-Old Pupil

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old Almajiri teacher, Lawal Nasiru, for allegedly assaulting one of his pupils in Darazo Local Government Area.

The victim, an 11-year-old boy identified as Sa’id Sani, was reportedly tied with a heavy rope and beaten with a stick and thick cable, leaving deep wounds on his hands and legs.

Bauchi police arrest teacher for child abuse

Police spokesman Ahmed Wakil confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday. He said the incident was reported on September 22 by Idris Mohammed, a resident of Gidan Waya, who brought the injured child to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Darazo.

According to Wakil, preliminary findings showed that the assault took place on September 21 at Unguwar Jarmai.

“On the 21st September, 2025, one Lawal Nasiru, aged 28 years, of Unguwar Jarmai, Darazo, criminally used a heavy rope to inhumanely tie the said Sa’id, an Almajiri boy, and further assaulted him with a stick and thick cable, causing various degrees of injuries to his hands and legs,” the statement read.

Responding to the report, Divisional Police Officer SP Auwalu Ilu led a team to the scene where the suspect was arrested. The child was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Darazo, Bauchi, for medical care.

During interrogation, Nasiru admitted to tying and beating the boy. He claimed that he restrained the pupil to prevent him from fleeing the school before his parents could be contacted.

The boy later recounted to investigators how he was bound with a thick rope for a prolonged period and subjected to repeated beatings.

State CID probes assault on Almajiri pupil

Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.

Wakil assured that the suspect will face prosecution once the inquiry is completed.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents of Darazo, with community members condemning the teacher’s actions and calling for strict punishment to deter similar acts of abuse in religious schools.

The police have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of child maltreatment to the authorities without delay.

The victim is currently receiving treatment and is expected to recover under medical supervision while the legal process continues.
