Final Year Student Dumps Her Newborn Baby Inside Bush as Police Swing Into Action

Akwanga, Nasarawa state - The Nasarawa state police command has swiftly arrested a final-year student of the College of Education, for dumping her newborn baby inside a bush in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.

Legit.ng gathered that the baby was wrapped in a piece of cloth and dumbed inside the bush.

The child was, however, discovered near a primary school on AA Koto Street in Akwanga on Wednesday, September 10.

Residents, however, reacted fast and took the infant alive, while alerting the police.

Confirming the arrest to newsmen in Lafia on Thursday, September 11, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the Commissioner of Police had ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution, Punch reported.

His words:

“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution.”

Punch reported that the suspect is a final-year NCE student of the College of Education, Akwanga.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom expressed shock and anger over the abandonment.

In July, a farmer in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi state, rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland.

The farmer, Kabiru Kamba, said he noticed an unusual ridge on his farm and invited motorcyclists to help dig. They discovered the baby wrapped in a cloth, crying and still alive, Vanguard reported.

Kamba informed security operatives, and the child was later placed in his custody by the Dandi Local Government Council.

Out of compassion, he and his wife, who had recently given birth, took in the baby and planned her naming ceremony.

These recurring incidents have continued to raise concerns about the rising cases of child abandonment across Nigeria.

Nasarawa: 16 inmates attack warders

Legit.ng earlier reported that no fewer than sixteen inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025. It was gathered that five officers were injured, with two currently in serious condition and receiving treatment at a government hospital.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, said the inmates reportedly overpowered personnel on duty during the breakout. Abubakar made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Abubakar said seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining nine.
