Kano: Hundreds Stranded as Community Cut off After Local Bridge Collapse
- A vital bridge in Kano collapsed after heavy rain, severing a key link between two communities
- The collapse has stranded students and severely disrupted access to work, markets, and schools
- Frustrated residents reveal they had warned authorities for years about the bridge's poor condition and are now demanding immediate action
A vital local bridge known as “Gadar Dare” collapsed in the early hours of Monday, severing a critical connection between the Yanshana and Naibawa communities, leaving hundreds of residents and students stranded.
The collapse, attributed to the structural weakening caused by a heavy downpour, occurred along the Kureken Sani road.

The bridge had for years served as the primary route for daily activities, including commuting to work, school, and other essential businesses.
Bridge collapse causes major disruption
Residents confirmed that the incident happened around midnight, a timing that likely averted a tragedy as there was no pedestrian or vehicular movement at that hour while it was still raining heavily.
Although no casualties or injuries have been reported, however the sudden collapse of the bridge has thrown daily life into disarray.
During a visit to the site by Legit.ng, it was observed that student’s from Yanshana who attend schools in Naibawa were unable to cross, while adults faced impossible detours to reach their workplaces and markets.

The community has expressed a mix of relief for the lack of injuries and deep frustration over the infrastructural failure.
“This bridge has been our life. Now, my journey to the Naibawa market, which used to take 20 minutes, will take over an hour using the alternative route,” said Aminu Sani, a trader in Naibawa
“I fear my goods will be left unsold, and my customers will go elsewhere. We have complained about the state of this bridge for years but the government has neglected us,” he added.
Community voices concerns
For mothers like Malama Hauwa Abdullahi, whose kids attend to school are in a state of panic.
“My first feeling was fear, then panic. My children’s school is on the other side. How will they go to school ? How do we get to the clinic if there is an emergency? We are completely cut off.”
“The government should please act immediately, not with promises but with action. We need a proper, durable bridge, not another structure like this one,” she explained.
Meanwhile local community leaders have appealed to the Kano State government for urgent intervention.
“We are pleading for the immediate construction of a new, sturdy bridge to restore the vital link and prevent further economic and social disruption to the affected communities,” Malam Abubakar Shehu, a community elder.
“It is incredibly disruptive. Many of my colleagues and I are stranded. While we are thankful no one was hurt, but this exposes the poor state of infrastructure in our community,” he added.
