Weather Alert: FG Warns 14 States over Looming Heavy Rain, Floods as List, Details Emerge

The federal government has issued a strong warning to 14 states over possible heavy rain and flooding in the coming days.
FG spoke through the Federal Ministry of Environment in a forecast of heavy rainfall between 4 and 8 September 2025.

FG: Heavy rain to trigger floods
The National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS Centre) of the ministry said the downpours could trigger floods in several localities across the country.
In a statement on Thursday, August 4, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, advised relevant stakeholders to remain vigilant.
“All stakeholders, including state governments and local authorities, must be on high alert to respond promptly to any flooding incidents,” Bokani said.
He also requested feedback from “relevant stakeholders and state government representatives” on major developments during the forecast period, Punch reported.
States and localities at risk
The states expected to experience heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding include:
- Ebonyi: Afikpo
- Cross River: Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap
- Kano: Gwarzo, Karaye
- Zamfara: Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukuyum
- Taraba: Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa
- Abia: Eziama, Umuahia
- Yobe: Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum
- Plateau: Langtang, Shendam, Wase
- Borno: Ngala
- Imo: Okigwe, Otoko
- Niger: Sarki Pawa
- Sokoto: Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira
- Kaduna: Kafanchan
- Akwa Ibom: Oron
FG emphasises preparedness
Bokani stressed the importance of preparedness to minimise loss of lives and property, The Cable reported.
“Prompt action by state governments and local authorities can significantly reduce the impact of these floods. We urge all communities in the affected areas to stay alert and follow safety advisories,” he said.

5-day flooding in 19 state
In another report, the federal government has predicted a heavy rainfall that would last for a period of five days and may lead to flooding in 19 states in the country and 76 locations.
This warning was disclosed in a statement by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment on Tuesday, August 5, asking stakeholders and residents to immediately take precautionary measures.
The warning came amid the devastating flood that struck Gombe and Ogun state on Tuesday, August 5. The disaster also affected four other states, which were Anambra, Lagos, Delta and Plateau.
NiMet: States that will experience heavy thunderstorms
Previously, Legit.ng reported that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a list of states where thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across the country.
NiMet said northern states such as Borno, Taraba, Bauchi, Adamawa, Kaduna, and Gombe will experience thunderstorms with moderate rain on the morning of Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The federal government agency added that thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in the afternoon/evening over parts of Kano, Jigawa, and other northern states.
