The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, said the introduction of Isese Day as a public holiday reflects Governor Abiodun’s recognition of the Yoruba heritage.

Akinmade said it is also a recognition of the vital role that Yoruba heritage play in the state’s identity and cultural landscape.

As reported by Nigerian Tribune, Akinmade made this known in a statement issued on Monday, August 18, 2025.

August 20 of every year is set aside to celebrate Yoruba religion and traditions, following a motion passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly and the approval of Governor Abiodun in 2023.

“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs.
“The celebration not only fosters a sense of community among practitioners but also invites the broader society to appreciate and respect the rich cultural tapestry that the Yoruba tradition contributes to Nigeria.”

What is Isese Day?

Isese Day is a regional public holiday celebrated by the Yoruba people on August 20th of every year to honor their deities, ancestors, and traditions, with celebrations including prayers, dances, and sacrifices.

Lagos Declares Fresh Public Holiday

Legit.ng earlier reported that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared Wednesday, August 20, as a work-free day in Lagos State in celebration of the 2025 Isese Day.

The Lagos government explained that the holiday was part of the governor's commitment to upholding the cultural values and heritage of the indigenous people.

According to a circular, the governor urged account officers in every government office to ensure the widespread circulation that work will resume at 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Oyo govt announces work-free Day for Isese 2025

In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that the governor of Oyo, Seyi Makinde, has also declared a work-free day for public servants in the state.

Governor Makinde, set aside Wednesday, August 20, a public holiday for workers and residents to celebrate 2025 Isese Day in Oyo state.

Isese Day is observed as a public holiday in Oyo, one of the 10 states controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
