Four Dead in Ogun as Poly Students’ Car Race Ends in Tragedy

Four people have lost their lives in Ogun State after a high-speed car race between two students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapade, ended in a fatal crash.

Eyewitnesses said the students had reportedly staked N30,000 on the outcome of the contest, with the winner set to take the prize money.

The race turned deadly when both drivers lost control of their vehicles and slammed into a roadside shop near a garage.

One occupant from each car died instantly. Another was critically injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Two people who were inside the shop at the time were also killed on the spot. The crash destroyed parts of the building and damaged goods inside.

Crowd gathers at tragic scene

Videos of the aftermath posted on X by user @Letter_to_Jack captured bystanders attempting to overturn one of the wrecked cars to recover bodies trapped beneath.

The scene drew a large crowd as residents expressed shock over the scale of the destruction. Some condemned the students’ decision to engage in a public speed contest, describing it as reckless and avoidable.

The incident has triggered a wave of criticism online, with many Nigerians demanding tighter controls on reckless driving and tougher measures against illegal street racing. Armed hoodlums attack helpless driver

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that armed assailants had attacked a truck driver, Dallami Yunusa, at Ogi Junction in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State and inflicted severe injuries before burning his vehicle.

Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Heavy Truck Unit in Okigwe, Dahiru Musa Raza, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Tuesday.
