Many women move on after a failed marriage, but for Remilekun Anikulapo-Kuti, life took a very different turn.

Her daughter, Nigerian dancer and singer Yeni Kuti, revealed on live TV that her late mother went celibate for more than 20 years after separating from Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Speaking on Your View on Thursday, Yeni explained that while intimacy is an important part of marriage, celibacy is also a personal choice. And one, her mother stood by till her last days.

The TV host recalled that her mother moved out of Fela’s house in 1981, but till her death in 2002, she never had another partner.

She stated:

“From 1981 till she died, she never met another man. She was celibate during that period. I knew, but I could never understand."

She added that during a medical check-up, doctors raised concerns after noticing changes in her mother’s body.

“The doctor asked why she wasn’t using it, that it was closing up. My mother replied, ‘Fela is the only man for me.’”
