Popular actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner from the renowned Cosby Show has died at the age of 54.

According to local authorities who talked with ABC News, the actor died on Sunday after drowning while swimming off the shore in Costa Rica.

According to Costa Rican National Police, Warner's body was located near Cocles, a beach in Limon province.

He was reportedly caught in a strong current, and his official cause of death is suffocation.

While the exact circumstances of the incident are unknown, experts warn that certain beaches in Costa Rica can pose serious risks depending on the conditions.

While many areas are safe for swimming, others are known for strong currents and rip tides that require extreme caution.

Warner was best remembered for his iconic role as Theodore Huxtable, Cliff Huxtable's only son, on the popular NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He appeared in all eight seasons from 1984 to 1992, earning worldwide acclaim and becoming a household name.

Water inhalation can impair breathing, resulting in unconsciousness or death.

Although it is unknown what caused him to drown, Costa Rican waters can be dangerous, depending on the beach and conditions.

Warner is survived by his wife and daughter, born in 2017.

While he periodically revealed glimpses of his family life on social media, he decided to keep their identities private and did not publicly reveal their names.

His role, Theo, was modeled after Bill Cosby's real-life son, Ennis Cosby, and was presented with depth and sensitivity.

In the show, Theo gets diagnosed with dyslexia after suffering academically during his freshman year at New York University, an arc that many viewers identified with.

Beyond The Cosby Show, Warner had a successful and broad career in both comedy and drama.

He played Malcolm McGee in the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie (1996-2000), opposite Eddie Griffin, and later starred as Dr. Alex Reed on BET's Reed Between the Lines from 2011 to 2015.
