A fresh wave of pump price hikes swept through Nigerian filling stations on Monday, August 11, 2025, with motorists in Lagos and Ogun now paying as much as ₦925 per litre for petrol.

This comes despite a drop in international crude oil prices, leaving many consumers questioning the rationale behind the sudden increases.

AP stations in Mowe, Ogun State, sold at ₦925, while Heyden outlets offered fuel at ₦910.

Along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, prices varied widely, with some stations still holding below ₦900 last week.

As of Monday, August 11, 2025, TotalEnergies sold petrol at ₦910, Asharami at ₦905, Enyo at ₦915, NIPCO at ₦890, and Fatgbems at ₦892.

Dangote refinery had raised its ex-depot price from ₦820 to ₦850 on Friday without citing a reason, setting the tone for the upward adjustments.

Depot prices show mixed margins

Petroleumprice.ng data shows depot prices averaging ₦855 per litre among major suppliers.

Aiteo sold at ₦850, Sobaz and Mainland at ₦870, and other depots such as NIPCO Lagos, Northwest, Alkanes, Ever, TSL, Pinnacle, Menj, and Sahara offered prices between ₦851.5 and ₦864.

Global oil trends defy local pricing

The hike comes as global oil prices experienced their steepest weekly drop since late June.

Brent crude fell 4.4% to $66.59 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate lost 5.1%, closing at $63.88.

Analysts attribute the decline to easing geopolitical tensions following discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian officials.

Other energy experts have said the increase in pump prices is not just about crude oil prices but more about logistics.

“Crude oil price is a major driver of petroleum product prices, but it is not the only determinant.
"There are other inbuilt costs such as levies and logistics. So, the marketers take those into account before increasing or reducing their prices,” Adeola Yusuf, energy policy analyst and Team Lead at Platforms Africa, said.

Marketers predict a price drop

Joseph Obele, National Publicity Secretary of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, said marketers anticipate a price drop within days.

According to him, petrol prices rose about 10 days ago when crude costs spiked, but with the recent fall, adjustments should follow quickly.

Obele also noted rumours that the Dangote refinery had suspended petrol loading for over a week, a claim the refinery denied, stating it supplies 40 million litres daily.

“By Tuesday or so, we hope to see a downward review of petrol prices,” he said.

Government, consumers watch closely

With pump prices surging despite cheaper crude, public scrutiny over fuel pricing is likely to intensify.

As marketers signal potential reductions, all eyes are on whether Nigeria’s retail market will pass on the benefits of falling oil prices to motorists in the days ahead.
