IGP Abubakar Reacts To Ekiti Elections, Reassures Of Order During Osun Poll

June 21 governorship elections in Ekiti State were conducted in proper manner and were hitch-free, the Nigeria Police Force declared. At the same time, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, urged the Nigerians, especially residents of Osun state, to ensure the same during August 9 elections.

This position was announced in a press release, signed by the police spokesperson, CSP Frank Mba, in Abuja on June 22, 2014, Sunday.

The statement commended Nigerians, residents of Ekiti state in particular, for peaceful conduct of the main political event of the state, emphasised on the very high level of patience, discipline, comportment, understanding and orderliness displayed by the citizens before, during and after the election.

The IGP also admitted that huge assistance of the citizens ensured hitch-free nature of the poll.

MD Abubakar expressed hope that Osun residents would display a similar level of support and cooperation to police and all the agencies concerned.

Besides the residents, the IGP has applauded police and security officers assigned on duty during campaign in Ekiti for their professional behaviour and actions. MD Abubakar charged the officers to remain focused and committed in the discharge of their duties to their fatherland.

The head of police enjoined Nigerians to remain confident, calm, hopeful and trusting in the abilities of the NPF and the security agencies to ensure safety of their lives and property, to protect the democratic rights and freedoms granted by the Constitution of the country.

He also promised that the NPF would consolidate, provide the needed atmosphere and re-enact the Ekiti security success story in other upcoming elections in Nigeria.

It would be recalled that extreme security measures were taken before and during Ekiti elections. Movement restrictions and additional number of deployed officers were among them.

A former FCT Minister Nasir El-Rufai warned that Jonathan’s Administration intends to rig Ekiti elections. However, pessimistic forecasts did not come true, as the incumbent governor Kayode Fayemi (APC) agreed with the results, congratulated Ayodele Fayose (PDP) on the victory.
