Perry Brimah Compares Rivers State Governor Amaechi to President Putin

Dr. Peregrino Brimah, coordinator of the Every Nigerian Do Something project and political observer, compares Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and says he would root for Amaechi should he ever decide to run for presidency.

Brimah expresses his admiration for Amaechi, saying the man continues to be "the most stand-up, revolutionary, daring and truth-speaking Nigerian public figure today" despite little probability of the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, giving him "the presidency spot".

Amaechi's most recent detainment by Nigerian Army soldiers on his way to Ado-Ekiti to attend a political rally led by his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, perfectly demonstrates, according to Dr. Brimah, Abuja's fear of him.

Amaechi particularly stands out because he has been challenging the President Goodluck Jonathan-led government long before the APC was formed. Dr. Brimah then speculates on possible reasons for Amaechi's determination to "help Nigeria get rid of this leadership": he might be privy to the President and his family's personal secrets (whether they "attended school, obtained ... their degrees. He knows the rituals, the robberies, the adoptions, the sacrifices, the abominations").

Amaechi has relations with people in all parts of the country, is "a friend to all" and has "a distinction in correspondence and active political strategization," Brimah observes.

He was the one telling Nigerians bluntly that they needed to "stone" thieves among the authorities, urged to stand up for their interests - but, Brimah says, we have failed to do so. Here, he echoes the musings of another prominent Nigerian political columnist, Mr. Okey Ndibe, who challenged the late Chinua Achebe's idea that Nigerians suffer solely because of inappropriate leadership. Both authors (Brimah and Ndibe) come to conclusion that ordinary Nigerians have, too, contributed to the country's problems by not demanding for more adequate leaders.

Developing his idea, Brimah said if Amaechi was appointed President of Nigeria, the Boko Haram insurgency "would have long been a thing of the past," because he would have "decimated Boko Haram just like Yar'Adua did". Together with Obiageli (Oby) Ezekwesili, former Federal Minister of Education and current Vice President of the World Bank's Africa division, as a Vice President, Amaechi could, just as Russia's Vladimir Putin, "bring back sense to Nigeria and will force our neighbors and even the colonial master to respect and fear us".
