Ladder Saga: NCAA Impose Fines On Aero, Pilot
Following the widely publicised use of a ladder by Aero Contractors Airlines to disembark passengers from a charter flight at the Bauchi Airport on Saturday, December 19.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a fine of several millions of naira on the airline management and the captain of the flight for the incident.
According to Leadership newspaper, the NCAA said the applicable sanction on Aero Contractors Airlines was in line with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs).
The chartered flight with registration number 5N-BLG was booked by a group of young people, from Abuja to Bauchi who were to attend a wedding party and the groom was also on board.
The director-general of NCAA, Captain Muhtar Usman, in a letter stated that the action of Aero Contractors Airline in allowing the use of a ladder to disembark passengers from a Boeing 737 – 500 aircraft in a non-emergency situation is contrary to its approved aircraft handling manual.
He said: “Therefore this is a violation of Part 9.2.4.2(b) of Nig.CARs which part attracts a civil penalty. All relevant agencies made useful submissions during the course of the investigation.
“In view of the safety implications of your action you (Aero) are hereby sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of Part 20.2.3(15) of the Nig.CARs.”

The management of the airline had explained why they had to use a ladder to disembark their passengers from the plane. According to the airline, the air stairs equipment at the Bauchi Airport, became unserviceable at the point of disembarkation.
Recall that in October 2015, Port Harcourt International Airport topped the rating of 10 worst airports in the world.
