TRAGEDY: Wall Collapses On Pupils, Kills One, Injures Four

One pupil killed, four others injured, on Thursday, after a wall of a community primary school collapsed in Adiye Owe, Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident, which occurred while the pupils of the school were on break from their lessons, came barely 24 hours after the members of the Education Committee of the Ogun State House of Assembly decried the poor state of facilities in public schools across the state.

The lawmakers had condemned what they described as the allocation of huge state funds to the construction of model schools across the state at the expense of the existing public institutions. The state government recently claimed to have so far expended about N5.6bn on the 28 yet-to-be completed model schools.

It was learnt that the underneath of the collapsed wall had been eaten up by erosion, which has been the problem in that school compound.

The injured pupils were first rushed to a private hospital before the Council Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Rahmon, who visited the school premises shortly after the incident, directed that they should be taken to the General Hospital, Ota, to ensure they were given better medical attention.

Rahmon also visited the family of the deceased to condole with them.

The council boss in a statement while sympathizing with the families of the affected pupils, promised that the injured ones would be given the best medical treatment.

Rahmon also instructed that the other walls of the affected classroom which were still standing be pulled down immediately and directed all school headmasters in the local government area to ensure the removal or demolition of any object or structure in the premises of their schools that could pose a danger to pupils.
