See How Many Nigerians Have Been Imprisoned For Last 14 Years

The International Centre for Prison Studies has published its statistics about the number of prisoners in different countries including Nigeria.

The International Centre for Prison Studies was established in London and aims at conducting research in prisons and imprisonment. According to the organization, the work of the Centre includes the development of the World Prison Brief database on prison populations around the world.

The estimates show that official capacity of prison system in Nigeria is 50 153 while the number of prisons is 240.

The organization also notes that 2.0% of  prison population are women, 1.7% are young prisoners while  0.3% are foreign citizens. The International Centre for Prison Studies adds that occupancy level of Nigerian prisons is 113.9%.
