Yesterday, it was reported 12 out of the 18 soldiers standing trial for attempted murder and mutiny in Maimalari cantonment, Maiduguri were on Monday found guilty and sentenced to death by a Military court sitting in Abuja.

The soldiers from 101 Battalion, who were arraigned before a Court Martial, had, on May 14, allegedly opened fire on a convoy conveying the 7 Division Commander, General Amadu Mohammed, at an army medical centre in Maiduguri.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions has trailed the death sentence of the 12 soldiers as Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) urged  the Nigerian military authority to reduce the death sentence to imprisonment in the interest of Justice.

Falana, however advised the convicted soldiers that should the Army council confirm the death sentence, they should take the case to the Court of Appeal.

According to tribune,  President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Augustine Alegeh, on Tuesday, appealed to the Federal Government to intervene saying:

"We are losing so many of our soldiers to violent  activities  of insurgents. So, why do we want to kill them? The country should consider these soldiers and rescind the capital punishment.”

Meanwhile there are reports that among the soldiers sentenced to death there is an only son of a surviving widow, some married with kids, with one of them who just welcomed a new baby some months ago.
