Police Diffuse Bomb As Inmates Break Jail In Delta

Eleven inmates at Government Remand Home, Sapele in Delta State have escaped after successfully cutting the iron bars, even as a bomb was diffused from a residential building.

State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Mr. Famous Ajieh who confirmed the two different incidents in a press release issued,Sunday, in Asaba.

According to him, “On 24th February, 2013 at about 08:30 hours, one Lucky Egbelughe, male, a senior staff of Sapele Remand Home reported at Sapele police station that on the same date at about 01:00 hours, eleven inmates escaped from the Remand Home by cutting the iron bars fence.

“However, on 18th March 2013, at about 17:00 hours, two of the escapees, one Junior Akudo male and Green Glory male all aged 20 years were re-arrested at Warri by policemen from ‘A’ Division Warri.

“The suspects”, he went on, “were members of a notorious criminal gang terrorizing Warri and environs and were remanded at Sapele Remand Home by a magistrate court Warri before their escape.

On the bomb scare, the PPRO stated that “on 19th March, 2013 at about 0900 hours, a female resident at New World City Ugbuwange Warri reported at A Division police State Warri that on the same date at about 0845 hours her son noticed an object suspected to be improvised explosive device (I.E>D) planted by unknown persons in one of the rooms on the first floor of her four storey building”.

He added that “on receipt of the report a team of anti-bomb squad form Area command and policemen from A division Warri rushed to the scene. The said object was confirmed to be I.E.D and was successfully diffused by the anti-bomb squad. Meanwhile the area has been placed under close surveillance with a view to tracking down the culprits”, the statement added.
