Mass Wedding: Traders Donate N4 Million To Kano State Government

Kantin Kwari Market Traders Association in Kano has donated N4 million to the state Hisbah Commission for the upcoming mass wedding of widows and divorcees.

About 1,000 suitors were expected to be wedded at a mass wedding to be sponsored by the government.

The state government had in 2012, conducted two sessions of the wedding involving 350 couples.

One hundred marriages were contracted during the first colourful ceremony, while another batch of 250 couples got their certificates at the second mass wedding.

The Director-General of the commission, Malam Abba Sufi, in Kano on Tuesday said that the donation was timely.

He urged wealthy individuals and organisations to also contribute to the upcoming ceremony to make it successful.

He said the wedding was delayed to enable the commission to conclude arrangements due to increased number of suitors.

“Preparing for a simultaneous wedding of 1,000 couples is not easy. It needs a lot of time and attention, that’s why it was delayed from it’s initial date.”

He said the 44 local governments were also preparing similar wedding in their areas.

NAN reports that the commission decided to carry out the programme to ease the hardship widows and divorcees faced in the state.
