- Professor Wole Soyinka has dismissed a trending post on the agitation for a Yoruba state attributed to him on WhatsApp
- The Nobel Laureate in a statement made the clarifications saying he does not take part in the offerings of social media
- Soyinka urged the public to ignore the post and utterances of people, who stole his identity, to send messages on social media
The renowned Nigerian novelist in a statement on Thursday, June 3, denounced the fake post, saying he does not participate in Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms.
In another report by Nigerian Tribune, Soyinka urged the public to disregard the information and posts of people, who stole his identity, to pass messages on social media.
He explained that any views he wanted to express on national and other issues would be done through the print media.
Agitation for Yoruba nation
Meanwhile, Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye, the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Odua, is happy the peaceful rally held in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, to drum up support for the actualisation of the Yoruba Nation was successful.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 2, by the media and communications secretary of the group, Akintoye said nobody can stop the agitation for Yoruba self-determination.
The police had barred the group from holding any rally in Abeokuta but members defied the order and came out in their numbers.
Akintoye has promised that the struggle for Yoruba self-determination will remain peaceful and orderly under his leadership. He said threatening the agitators or attempting to quash their rights is cowardly.
Yoruba nation agitators forcefully reopen border
Yoruba nation agitators have forcefully reopened Idiroke border Idiroko, Ipokia local government area of Ogun state.
The agitators were repelled by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service who were manning the border town between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
The federal government since 2019 had closed the border when it directed that all forms of importation be done through the seaports.
