- Wilfred Ndidi has been sublime since he arrived at Premier League club Leicester City in 2017
- Fans of the English club have compared the Nigerian international with N’Golo Kante
- Ndidi says he only wants to be himself and not be compared with any other footballer
Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi has stated that he does not fancy being compared with any other player, adding that comparing him with N’Golo Kante used to irritate him.
The Nigerian international joined the Foxes in 2017 and has become one of the leading players in the Premier League as well as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe.
Following Leicester City’s league glory in the 2015/2016 season and the arrival of Ndidi a year later, fans have continued to compare him with Kante.
In his reaction, Ndidi, in a chat with BBC Sport Africa stated that although he understands the plight of fans, he used to feel irritated with such comparisons. He said:
"Yes it [comparison] used to irritate me but it's football and I completely understand the fans because they love to find something to talk about.
"Even before and then when I arrived at Leicester I heard it. I only wanted to be Wilfred Ndidi and not someone else.
"The comparison with others, about who is better or if Kante and I play alike, is irrelevant to me. I think all that comparison was for those who love to talk and I didn't focus on it.
"You're comfortable when you are yourself and not listening or trying to be something you are not."
Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho have become an item in and out of Leicester City's dressing room, cited on Twitter.
