A coalition of civil society organisations in Nigeria has sent a petition to the acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, over alleged intimidation and threat to the life of one Mrs. Abiola Babatunde Lawal.

In the petition signed by the group's director of programmes, Stanley Uguru, and seen by Legit.ng, the CSOs said Mrs. Babatunde-Lawal complained that since her husband died in 2020, she has been facing threats by another woman.

Uguru claimed that Mrs. Babatunde-Lawal was arrested on Thursday, April 8 at about 11:25 pm by two operatives of the Nigerian police at the former Special Anti-Robbery Squad office on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police.

He stated that it took the intervention of her lawyer and other influential Nigerians for her to regain her freedom at about 1 am the following day.

Part of the petition read:

“After leaving the station on the morning of April 9, 2021, by 1 am, her blood pressure had shot so high and she was immediately hospitalised, adding that while she was at the hospital, the doctor advised that her phone should be kept away from her by the nanny.
“According to her, while the phone was with the nanny, a man who identified himself as Prince Tony called, claiming to be an officer of the Nigerian Police Force, and requested that she should come back to the station.
“Mrs. Babatunde-Lawal is critically lying in the hospital and may be suspected to have suffered some harm within the time she spent at the police station. All attempts to get to her since the morning of April 9, 2021, has proved abortive.

Meanwhile, the Policing Nigeria Awareness Initiative (PNAI) has declared that one Chijioke Okoro is not a member of the group and was not assigned to carry out any operation on behalf of the PNAI.

The founder and chairman governing council of PNAI, Ambassador Egbe Akparakwu Adun disclosed this in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Thursday, April 8.

Okoro was arrested and paraded by the Lagos state police command recently for allegedly harrasing truck drivers around the Apapa port.

Meanwhile, the executive vice-chairman of the Presidential Task Team on the Restoration of Law and Order in Apapa Port, Comrade Kayode Opeifa, earlier this year, declared that the team restored sanity on the roads leading to the nation's busiest port.
