NAFDAC Finally Discovers, Reveals Cause of Strange Illness in Kano

- Much of the mystery surrounding a strange sickness in Kano has been unravelled

- NAFDAC revealed that the ailment came from an unapproved food drink

Facts concerning the cause of a strange sickness in Kano have been disclosed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

NAFDAC's director-general, Mojisola Adeyeye, on Tuesday, March 16, revealed to journalists that the mysterious illness was caused by food poisoning, The Cable reports.

Adeyeye explained:

"The Kano incident is a case of food poisoning with flavored drinks that has a chemical called dansami.
"It is very serious because the food poisoning resulted in diarrhea, vomiting, and hospitalisation.
“Our zonal director, Pharmacist Gimba, is on top of this and our pharmacovigilance officers are also investigating what actually happened."

She said that the agency will do a lot of testing in the lab to know the nature of the chemical which caused the food poisoning.

Although Adeyeye admitted that details about the origin of the food drinks are not yet known, the chances of recurrence are minimal, adding that the drinks were manufactured without the approval of NAFDAC.

Earlier, an outbreak of a strange disease suspected to be caused by food poisoning in Kano state had led to the death of three people, while 284 had been hospitalised.

The outbreak which occurred on March 11, is said to have been caused by contaminated water and local drink.

The director of the Disease Control in Kano state ministry of health, Dr Bashir Lawan, confirmed the incident.

Lawan said the ministry of health has held a meeting over the outbreak. The state commissioner of Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, confirmed that no fewer than 284 were hospitalised following the outbreak of the strange disease.
