Everton vs Manchester City: Premier League game postponed after COVID-19 outbreak

Everton’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City has been postponed due to coronavirus fears.

According to reports from Sky Sports, several members of the City squad tested positive for the virus in the build-up to the clash.

Defender Kyle Walker and striker Gabriel Jesus were already confirmed to be positive cases last week along with two other members of City's staff but several other unnamed players also contracted the virus.

This is the second Premier League game to be postponed this season after Aston Villa vs Newcastle United suffered the same fate earlier in December.

A number of games in the EFL were also postponed due to outbreaks. However, Man City have released a statement confirming the postponement of the game.

"After the latest round of Covid-19 testing, the club returned a number of positive cases, in addition to the four already reported on Christmas Day.

"With the security of the bubble compromised, there posed a risk that the virus could spread further amongst the squad, the staff and potentially beyond.

City brushed past Newcastle 2-0 in their boxing day fixture an are set to face Chelsea in their next match on Sunday, January 3 before preparing to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-final on January 6.

A win for Everton would have taken them level on points with Liverpool while Guardiola’s side would have moved to the top four with a win.

The Premier League also released a statement confirming City lodged a request to have the game postponed.

"Manchester City lodged a request with the Premier League today to rearrange the game following an increase in positive Covid-19 test results received by the club this morning, on top of the cases reported on Christmas Day.

The new date for the game is yet to be confirmed but as it stands, Manchester City have two Premier League games in hand.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the English Football Association has confirmed that Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah who initially went on international break has tested positive for coronavirus.

Salah’s development is a huge blow to the entire Liverpool squad that is already depleted following a number of injury cases that have plagued the club recently.

Confirming Salah’s coronavirus case, the English FA announced that the 28-year-old produced a positive result upon return to England.
