Karim Benzema set another record after inspiring Real Madrid to a flawless victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid during their Spanish League encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.

A 15th-minute strike from Casemiro and an own goal from Jan Oblak meant Diego Simeone's men suffered their first defeat of the season.

Though they remain atop of the La Liga table with 26 points from 11 matches, Los Blancos have however been able to reduce their lead to three points.

However, the Frenchman's appearance in their much-needed triumph over the title contenders means he has made 528 appearances for the Madridista as reported by Tribal Football.

And this means he is now the foreign player with the most appearances in the club's history after overtaking Brazil legend Roberto Carlos who featured for them 527 times during his 11-year reign at the club.

Real president Florentino Perez was said to have honoured the Benzema and Carlos with commemorative shirts featuring their respective appearance tallies.

The Frenchman scored twice in his side's Champions League triumph over Borussia Monchengladbach to join the list of players to have scored 50 goals in the group stage of the competition.

Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have a better goal record than the 32-year-old striker.

Benzema joined Madrid in 2009 and has won four Champions League, three UEFA Super Cup, three Spanish League titles among several other silverware in his 12-year reign at the Bernabeu.

He has also won two Spanish League goal of the month awards in October 2014 and June 2020.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Real Madrid cruise to the next round of the Champions League following a one-sided game against German side Borussia Monchengladbach which ended 2-0.

Los Blancos claimed 10 points from 6 matches to win Group B ahead of Monchengladbach who are also through with 8 points.

Frenchman Karim Benzema was responsible for the two goals that helped them progress to the next stage of the competition.
