Avon HMO partners Kaffy to launch health plans for Nigerian creatives

Thanks to a first-of-its-kind partnership, Nigerian creatives in the professional dance industry will now enjoy easier access to healthcare with the new Kaffy Health Plan by Avon HMO. This was announced at a press conference with veteran dancer, Kafayat Shafau-Ameh (Kaffy), who was moved to improve the welfare of practitioners after the death of four dancers within two months this year.

Currently, less than 5% of Nigerians have health insurance and with the youth constituting a bulk of the population across various creative fields, AVON HMO’s new plans will further improve access to quality healthcare.

At the launch of the new health plans, Kaffy noted that the new health plans couldn’t have come at a better time, considering that an estimated 98% of Nigerian dancers lacked health insurance coverage. This, she blamed on a lack of awareness about wellbeing and poor health-seeking behaviour among practitioners in the dance industry.

The journey to a health insurance deal for my artistic community has been a long time coming. Although it is sad that we cannot bring back to those that we’ve lost, quite avoidably due to lack of access to basic health care, we can protect those who are still around. This is why we are delighted to partner with a market leader like Avon HMO, to further deepen health coverage among creatives,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of Adesimbo Bello-Ukiri, the CEO of Avon HMO, Atinuke Kolade, the company’s Head of Sales, Retention and Growth, reinforced the commitment of Avon HMO to improving access to healthcare among Nigerian creatives.

Nobody deserves to be stranded for an inability to pay medical bills but hardly a year goes by without a prominent artist, young and old alike, making the rounds on social media for a medical condition they need funds to treat. However, these people wouldn’t need crowdfunding to pay medical bills if they had a healthcare plan because they would have access to preventive medical checks which make it easier to spot serious ailments before it becomes too late. What we’ve done in partnership with Kaffy is our contribution towards protecting people in the creative and entertainment fields.

Also present at the launch, Dr Babajide Oyeduntan, the Head of Retail Sales at Avon HMO added that HMOs should focus more on covering Nigerians in the informal sector because they are largely underserved.

Before Avon, no other HMO had retail plans but now there’s some progress in that regard. However, we cannot stop; we should always be looking at ways to make it easier for people to have access to health insurance. This demands a lot of thinking outside the box when it comes to the informal sector. With this partnership and launch of the Kaffy health plan, we believe we are taking one more step in the right direction, as an organization and industry in general,” he said.

Dr Oyeduntan added that like every other Avon HMO plan, people can sign up for the Kaffy health plans via www.avonhealthcare.com.
