Legit.ng notes that Makinde is the only PDP governor in the southwest. The five other states in the region Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun and Lagos are all controlled by the ruling APC.

The PDP candidate in the election is Eyitayo Jegede, a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, just like the incumbent Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jegede defeated seven other aspirants to win the PDP ticket in August. He returns as the opposition party's candidate in 2020 after losing in 2016 to Akeredolu.

The PDP's campaign flag-off came several days after the APC kicked off its own.

Legit.ng reported that Ondo was agog on Saturday, September 5 as Bola Tinubu, national leader of the APC, and some top members of the ruling party arrived the state for the reelection campaign of Governor Akeredolu.

The governorship election in Ondo is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
