Almajiri: Governor Matawalle makes u-turn, says Zamfara will accommodate repatriated children

- Zamfara state government has said that it would give accommodation to all repatriated Almajiri

- This was disclosed on Wednesday, May 27, by the state director-general media, public enlightenment and communication, Yusuf Idris Gusau

- Governor Matawalle also announced the scrapping of the committee he earlier constituted for the repatriation of Almajari from the state

Despite the rejection of repatriated Almajiri by some northern governors, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has declared that his state would accommodate them.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the governor also said his administration would not repatriate any Almajiri from the state.

Legit.ng gathered that this was contained in a statement signed by the director-general media, public enlightenment and communication, Yusuf Idris Gusau, on Wednesday, May 27.

He made his position known when he received two leading Islamic scholars, Sheikh Abdullahi Dallah Dallah, the Chief Imam of Sambo Dan-Ashafa Jumaat Mosque, Gusau and Sheikh Bello Kanwa to a Sallah homage at his country home, Maradun.

Governor Matawalle also announced the scrapping of the committee he earlier constituted for the repatriation of Almajari from the state and cancelled the repatriation plan.

"The decision followed a careful study of the Almajiri system in the state which only needs to be integrated into western education for the purpose of acquiring quality education in both western and Islamic knowledge," he said.

He emphasised that he cancelled the repatriation idea in order to give the Almajiri a sense of belonging and reduce the stigmatisation meted on the Almajiri Islamic teaching and learning in the country.

Governor Matawalle also called on the Islamic scholars in the country to promote the teaching of justice and unity among their followers for the purpose of having a United Nigeria.

He noted that Islamic scholars are known for teaching justice and unity which is the guiding principle of any development.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that following allegations that Almajiris were being smuggled into the southeast, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi, declared that the children were not welcomed in his state.

It was reported that Umahi said they won’t be entertained in any part of the state.

According to the report, although he commended northern governors for acknowledging the problem of Almajiri, he, however, insisted that he would not be afraid to reject them.
