Kaduna govt says most of its COVID-19 cases are Almajiris repatriated from Kano

The Kaduna state government has disclosed that most of the active COVID-19 cases in the state are Almajiris (Islamic pupils) recently repatriated from Kano state.

Muyiwa Adeyeye, the spokesman to Kaduna state governor disclosed that 65 of the cases, which represent 90 percent of the COVID-19 patients currently in the state’s isolation center, are Almajiris.

The state government also said two policemen were among the 72 active cases in the state, Premium Times reports.

The Kaduna government stated that policemen and other security officials were flouting interstate restriction of movement imposed by the government to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the federal government has raised an eyebrow against the continuous repatriation of kid beggars popularly known as almajiris, saying it is a violation of guidelines issued by President Muhammadu Buhari on inter-state movement ban amidst coronavirus crisis.

Speaking during the presidential task force briefing on Covid-19 on Monday, May 4, Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said the government will engage the states on the process for the repatriation of almajiris, Daily Trust reports.

The SGF lamented the low level of compliance towards inter-state movement restriction.

In another news, the federal government has told the medical facilities in the country to stop rejecting patients, especially emergency cases.

Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, said this on Monday, May 4, in Abuja during the presidential task force briefing on Covid-19 in the country.

Ehanire, however, noted that it is unethical not to attend to persons in distress, adding that any infected health worker puts a strain on the system, NAN reports.
