Leave Justice Odili out of Bayelsa politics, Lawyers tell APC

- The Supreme Court verdict concerning the Bayelsa state governorship election is still generating reactions

- Attempts to allegedly blackmail Justice Mary Odili after the apex court's verdict have been rebuffed

- A group, Lawyers in Defence of Democracy, cautioned APC supporters over their verbal attacks on the well-respected Justice Odili

A group, Lawyers in Defence of Democracy (LDD) have urged members and sympathisers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop their verbal attacks on Justice Mary Odili of the Supreme Court following the loss of the party in the Bayelsa state.

APC members had singled out Justice Odili for derision days after the apex court sacked the party as the winner of last year's governorship election.

The Supreme Court, in its ruling, noted that the deputy governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo forged his credentials.

A Federal High Court had earlier ruled that the credentials of Degi-Eremienyo were forged before an Appeal Court reversed it.

LLD in a statement sent to Legit.ng and signed by its national coordinator, Barr. Ohazuruike Tochukwu and spokesperson, Ishaq Bello said it observed that the APC and its supporters have deliberately singled out Justice Odili and attempted to malign her reputation, following the ruling.

Part of the statement read: “It is obvious that the leadership of the party in order to divert attention from its failures and impunity yet again as it did in Zamfara and Rivers states that have instigated these supporters, social media blackmailers and other uninformed Nigerians to begin to defame an eminent jurist of the Supreme Court.

“How these APC members and their leadership quickly forgot that the same Justice Mary Odili was still married to a PDP stalwart when she read the lead judgment in the Katsina, Kaduna, Lagos and Nasarawa governorship appeals all won by the APC.’’

“If Justice Odili is as compromised as they would now want Nigerians to believe, how then did the APC win all the appeals where she wrote and read the lead judgment?’’ the group queried.

The group advised the APC to follow the legal ways of seeking redress instead of maligning justices of the Supreme Court.

The LLD also called to an end the violence in Bayelsa in the wake of the judgement.

Meanwhile, Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the Supreme Court ruling sacking APC in Bayelsa.

Governor Okowa described the ruling as a welcome development for the PDP and its candidates in the governorship race.
