Amotekun: 5 crucial things police affairs minister said about security initiative
The minister of police affairs, Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, has said some important things about the southwest security outfit code-named Operation Amotekun.
According to the Nation, here are therefore five things the police minister said during the weekend:
1. I suppose the intention is a good one
Dingyadi said that he will like to believe that the intention behind the security project is a good one. He, however, said if the different meanings people are giving to it is true, then it is not legal.
"I suppose the intention by the governors in the region is a good one. But if what people are saying and reading different meaning to it is true, then is not legally right,” he said.
2. There is the police that should be supported by the state governments
He said the state government should rather support the police that has already been created.

3. Security is the responsibility of all
The police minister also emphasized that protecting lives and property in the nation is the collective responsibility of all levels of government.
4. Amotekun should not be seen as a regional initiative
The police minister said that no one should see the security project as a regional one but rather a contribution of the southwest governors to the federal government in ensuring security.
”I advise against those portraying Amotekun as a regional security outfit because I believe is part of the southwest governors' contribution to the FG to secure the country and if it's anything different support it,” he said.
5. The constitution gives federal government total power on security
The minister said that the constitution has clearly spelt it out that the federal government has the total responsibility to secure the nation.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Aare Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, on Sunday, January 19, said that any move by the federal government to destroy the southwest security initiative, Amotekun, will not work.
The legal luminary added that the security project is very much legal according to the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.
