Njideka Akunyili Crosby, the daughter of former minister, Dora Akunyili, recently got a special visit from former US first lady, Michelle Obama, at her art studio.
Crosby's sister, Chidiogo shared the adorable photo of her sister and Obama on her social media page and expressed joy that her sister was getting such recognition for doing what she loves the most - painting.
The former first lady looked elegant as she smiled and posed with Crosby in the beautiful photo which has garnered a lot of comments on social media.
Recall that Crosby was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship a while back. Her works which have gained global recognition include painting, drawing, photo transfer, printmaking and other materials of making art come alive.
In 2016, demand for Akunyili Crosby’s work, which she produces slowly, far outweighed supply, prompting her prices to soar at auction. In March 2017, a work by Akunyili Crosby titled The Beautyful Ones was sold by a private collector for $3 million (N1 billion) at Christie's London.
Reports state that Crosby as an artist is influenced by writer Chinua Achebe whose focus on changing the English language to fit his culture is interpreted through Akunyili Crosby's artwork
Meanwhile, Nigerian painter, Babajide Olatunji had his masterpiece titled Efunsetan Adekemi Aniwura exhibited at the Contemporary African Art Fair at the Somerset House, in Central London.
Olatunji's subject, Efunsetan Adekemi Aniwura was the second Iyalode of Ibadan and said to be one of the wealthiest women who ever lived.
The painting itself, 250cm by 300cm is painted with acrylic on primed linen.
