Bayelsa elections: Sporadic gunshots in Jonathan's hometown as INEC collate results

- Reports from the field indicate that there are sporadic gunshots in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa state

- The gunshot comes as resident and Nigerians as a whole are expected the announcement of results from the Saturday, November 16, election conducted in the state

- It was also gathered that the gunshots which threw residents into fear was also heard in some other local government areas of the state

Hours ahead of the declaration of governorship election results in Bayelsa state on Sunday, November 17, sporadic gunshots have been heard in Ogbia local government area - the home country of a former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan had on Saturday, November 16, cast his vote in his polling unit 39 of ward 13, despite disagreement with the outgoing governor of the state, Seriake Dickson, over a choice candidate for the election.

Although the former president is believed to have strongly withheld support for his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) cleared the unit massively.

The APC also cleared all the polling units in Otuoke Ward 13, the ancestral home of Jonathan.

At the LGA collation centre, crises erupted Sunday morning as gunshots were reportedly fired by political thugs.

Agents of the ruling party in the state and those of the APC were said to have engaged in free for all fights as a result of alleged attempts by APC agents to force fake results on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)'s officials.

Hijacking of electoral materials and results also continues to greet the collation process, with the latest report indicating that INEC officials and sensitive materials for Nembe local government area, Mini Ward 11, Ikensi Ward 12, and Oluasiri Ward 13 were hijacked and have been allegedly taken to houses believed to be of two APC chieftains, where the officials were reportedly forced at gunpoint to sign result sheets.

As at the time of filing this report, collation at the state headquarters, Yenagoa, for the eight local government areas, have not commenced, as results from various areas, including Ogbia, are still being collated.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Dickson had called for the cancellation of the governorship election result in the state.

The governor had accused the Nigerian Army and other security agencies operating in the state during the election of working with the APC to manipulate the polling process.

According to the governor, the General Officer Commanding for the 6 Division, Jamil Sarham, was comprising the security situation in Bayelsa state.
