Michael Agboya: 24-year-old Ghanaian photographer who dropped out of school wins ₦9m

The greatness of Africa is not just in the entity with the name but in the people. A proof of that is in Michael Agboya’s story, a photographer who won the Best Photo of the Year with a whopping prize of $25,000 (N9,025,000) with his entry, Songs of Freedom.

Agboya won the competition during the official Agora Awards 2019 that was held in Barcelona on Wednesday, November 6.

Forbes reports that the competition was contested for nine months with more than 130,000 submissions from variously skilled photographers.

Out of the many entries, the winning submission was picked from 50 finalists. What makes the Agora competition different from others is that it is open to both professional and amateur photographers.

The winner of the competition is picked by judges who are experts in the field and the public through the Agora app, which has more than 3.5 million users from about 200 countries.

While speaking about the sacrifice he made for his passion, Face to Face Africa reports Agboya said: “This award means a lot to me since it is a prize for the many years of sacrifice, and following my passion.”

Agboya’s passion for arts and photography started in 2014 when he lost his dad and had to drop out of school.

He had to buy his first professional camera to pursue his passion for photography with the savings meant for his tuition.
