Misitura Lawal-Arowona: Nigerian PhD student from Unilorin emerges 3rd in int'l competition in India

- Misitura was said to have developed a more effective means of treating tuberculosis using new metal drug

Misitura Lawal-Arowona, a Nigerian PhD student in the department of chemistry, University of Ilorin, on Friday, August 9, came third in an international conclave event in Chennai, India.

The Nigerian PhD student participated in the competition alongside 21 other academics where Shivanshu Kumar Tiwari, a Nepalese, emerged first in the contest, Royal News reports.

The debut conclave event was organized with the theme “Achievement of Capacity Building in Developing Nations.

It was organized by the department of biotechnology of the Indian university, which ran from Thursday, August 8, to Friday, August 9.

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that this same student made a great achievement in the treatment of tuberculosis when she developed new metal anti-TB drug.

Mistura who was undergoing a fellowship programme at faculty of science in Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India, successfully came up with a metal enabled anti-tuberculosis (TB) drug.

The new development by the Nigerian has helped increase the efficiency of TB drug used worldwide compared to how they were popularly consumed.

As a result, she has been able to create medicine like ciprofloxacin HCl, ofloxacin, pyrazinamide and moxifloxacin HCl. Professor Rajendrasinh Jadeja, who is mentoring the Nigerian scientist at the university, commented on the high quality of the medicine and how various tests have confirmed them so.

Olurotimi Badero, a US based doctor is also another Nigerian making the nation proud. He is an interventional cardiologist and nephrologist (heart and kidney specialist) recognised as the first and only of his kind.
