Eid-el-Kabir: Muslims asked to look out for new moon on August 1

- Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Muslims across the country to look out for the new moon on Thursday, August 1

- The new moon will usher in Dhu’l-Hijjah, the 12th month of Year 1440 A.H of the Islamic calendar

- Any Muslim that sights the moon is instructed to report such to the sultan through the nearest district or village head

The Sultan of Sokoto and president general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Muslims across the country to look out for the new moon today, Thursday, August 1.

The new moon will usher in Dhu’l-Hijjah, the 12th month of Year 1440 A.H of the Islamic calendar.

A statement by the chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in the Sultanate Council, Prof Sambo Wali Junaidu, advised Muslims to report the sighting of the moon to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the sultan, The Nation reports.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking for the new moon of Dhu’l-Hijjah 1440 A.H on August 1 and report to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar III,” the statement reads in part.

In a related development, Islamic clerics in Omo-Aran, in Kwara state, on Wednesday, July 31, warned Muslims against running into debts to buy rams for the upcoming Sallah celebration.

The clerics in separate conversations with newsmen said ram slaughtering like the Hajj rite is only for those who could afford it.

Sodiq Afolayan, the chief imam of the central mosque in Omu-Aran said the religion forbids any act of unnecessary expenses.

“Muslims should not go the extra mile of borrowing money just to buy and slaughter rams for Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) celebration. Both acts of slaughtering rams and pilgrimage to the holy land are for genuine worship of God for those who have the financial capacity.

“As we warm up for the Sallah celebration in few days’ time, Muslims are advised to spend within their limit not only on rams but in every daily activities,” he said.

In the same vein, Abdulrazak Aduagba, the chief cleric Rahamatul Adabiyyah Muslim Association, also said buying Sallah rams should not affect basic household obligations.

He said paying school fees and providing for the family must not be affected in the bid to buy rams for the Muslim festive season.
