Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the service chiefs and the inspector general of police have laid out a new policy on community policing in a recent meeting they had with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The vice president made this known on Sunday, July 14, when he paid condolence visit to Pa Reuben Fasoranti whose daughter, Funke Olakunrin was killed by suspected gunmen.

“As you know, the President, very recently, met with the Service Chiefs, and also with the Inspector General of Police, and they have laid out a new policy on Community Policing,” Osinbajo said.

Explaining further how the community policing system will work, the vice president said: “One of the most important things is gathering intelligence and that is why we have Community Policing; where policemen will be trained in their own local governments and remain there. This is as close as we can get to the Community Policing structure that we expect to have.”

Legit.ng reports that Osinbajo said another strategy the federal government will adopt in tackling insecurity is to get the Nigerian Army involved.

He said: “The other thing is that we are also engaging the Army, so there will be a bit more military presence, especially along the roads and as you’ve heard, the Inspector General of Police has committed to full coverage with even helicopters, first in the search for the killers, and also to ensure adequate presence to deter this kind of terrible situation from recurring.”

In a related development, Nigeria's former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said Nigeria should return to community policing "in order to stem the tide of insecurity".

Atiku made the suggestion via a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, July 15.

The former vice president said he recalled that the criminal rate in Nigeria was small when he was young.

He attributed the relative peace to community police system which he said Nigeria must return to if it is serious about putting an end to the spate of insecurity being currently experienced in the country.
