CJN: Buhari nominates Justice Muhammad for appointment

- President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, July 11, nominated Tanko Muhammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN)

- The nomination was contained in a letter sent to the Senate on Thursday for approval

- The letter, read by the Senate president, Ahmad Lawal, also requested the upper chamber's approval of the appointment of 15 special advisers of President Buhari

In a letter to the Senate on Thursday, July 11, President Muhammadu Buhari requested for the confirmation of the Justice Tanko Muhammad as Nigeria's substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN.

The letter read by the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary revealed the request came on the heels of the recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on behalf of Muhammad, Daily Trust reports.

Moreover, the president sought the red chamber's approval for the appointment of 15 special advisers.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended to President Buhari to appoint Justice Muhammad for the office.

The decision was reached at an emergency meeting headed by former president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdullahi.

A statement by the director of information of the NJC, Soji Oye, on Wednesday, July 10, showed that the decision followed a recommendation of the interview committee set up by the council.

The council reached the decision after “candidates presented by the Federal Judicial Service Commission to it for appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria" were screened.

The statement also stated that some new states chief judges were recommended to state governors for appointment and Grand Kadis.

The states concerned are: Lagos Anambra, Ebonyi, Niger and Taraba; and Grand Kadis for Sharia Courts of Appeal in Kano and Jigawa states.
