Lionel Messi wins 1st international title with Argentina after 5-1 win over Nicaragua

- Lionel Messi clinched first ever title with Argentina over the weekend

- The 32-year-old scored twice to help his side beat Nicaragua 5-1

- Messi will hope they can win this year's Copa America title staging in Brazil this month

Barcelona star Lionel Messi clinched his first ever silverware for Argentina senior team after leading his side to a 5-1 victory over Nicaragua last weekend.

The 31-year-old, who turns 32 this month scored two quick goals in the 37th and 38th minute to put La Albiceleste ahead in the first half.

Lautaro Martinez also scored twice while Roberto Pereyra scored the final goal late in the second half to ensure they cruise to convincing victory after regulation period.

And Messi clinched the Copa San Juan trophy on Saturday, June 8, as reported by Daily Mail.

However, his recent achievement has sparked up another comparison between him and Cristiano Ronaldo, who was crowned UEFA Nations League champion.

The 34-year-old failed to score in their final clash against Holland but his presence was able to help them win their second trophy in three years.

Ronaldo-led team won the 2016 UEFA European Championship in France which made many rank him above the Argentine.

Both stars have however won some international recognition this weekend but Ronaldo's feat carries more weight as that is an official tournament.

Goncalo Guedes' 60th minute strike was Portugal needed to hand Fernando Santos' side the victory on home soil.

Last weekend's achievement was Portugal's second trophy in three years, following their Euro 2016 triumph.

"Argentina before Messi: 2 World Cups won, 14 Copa Americas won, 1 Confederations Cup won. Argentina with Messi: 4 finals played, 0 finals won.

The 31-year-old will be hoping to prove his doubters wrong and finally win a major trophy with Argentina.

He has come close before - finishing three-times as a runner-up in the Copa America (2007, 2015 and 2016) and once in the World Cup (2014).

Legit.ng earlier reported that Cristiano Ronaldo has won his second silverware for Portugal following their 1-0 win over Netherlands in final of the maiden edition of the UEFA Nations League tourney.

Goncalo Guedes scored the only goal that handed coach Fernando Santos' men the triumph after normal regulation period.

Ronaldo also emerged the tournament's highest goals scorer after netting hat-trick against Switzerland in their semifinal clash.
