Farmers/herders clashes will soon end - El Rufai

Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed optimism that frequent clashes farmer and Fulani herdsmen will soon become the thing of the past in the state.

Daily Sun reports that El-Rufai who expressed this view at the commissioning of a 500-litre milk and yoghurt processing plant at Ladugga village said the processing plant in Ladugga would end the situation.

The governor who was represented by Hadiza Balarabe, his running mate in the next election, said the processing plant was built through a partnership between the state government, Ladugga Cooperative Society and Business Innovation Facility, a UK-DFID programme.

Balarabe stated that the plant would also end the era when the nomads lose income owing to lack of storage and preservation technology and facility.

El Rufai’s running mate, who was conducted around the facility by Ayo Celestine, a consultant for BIF, said that it would have a positive impact on the lives of many people in the area.

According to Celestine, the facility produces Wule Yoghurt, which is now being sold in the market.

Also there present at the venue, the state commissioner for agriculture and forestry, Manzo, Daniel Maigari, said this ministry and BIF had encouraged pastoralists in Ladugga Grazing Reserve to experiment on the growing of Napier grass in 2015.

Maigari stated that the cows produce 3.5 litres per cow per day on the average, thereby raising their owners’ earnings and improving their lives.

He further pointed out that the fortunes of the nomads have now changed for the better, especially when the state government and BIF built the milk processing plant for the production and preservation of yoghurt.

Maigari said 43 milk collection centres had been established for nomadic women to sell their milk at a much higher price.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Governor Nasir El-Rufai revealed that his government paid money to Fulani Herdsmen to pacify them to stop killing in Southern Kaduna.

The region as well as some parts of the south has been affected by rampaging herdsmen who kill and sometimes destroy crops.

The governor of Kaduna spoke in his office where he revealed that the herdsmen where not from Nigeria but from neighbouring countries.
