The minister of agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh, has said the defence minister, Mansur Dan-Ali, was expressing his personal views when he said anti-grazing laws by some state governments are responsible for the farmers/herders clashes.

Ogbeh on Tuesday, June 19, said Dan-Ali’s comments did not represent the position of the federal government on the issue, Premium Times reports.

“As for the minister’s opinion, it is his view,” the agriculture minister said at the presentation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan; a plan put in place by the federal government to permanently resolve the herders-farmers crises and improve meat and milk production.

The minister said the government was determined to implement the new plan and suggested that open cattle grazing was outdated.

“Cows cannot continue to roam the way they did in the past,” he said, promising to engage Dan-Ali not to express such views in future.

The agriculture minister stated that the plan to permanently resolve the herders-farmers crises was evidence-based, noting that the National Economic Council (NEC) which adopted it is headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

“NEC is chaired by the vice president. The vice president is more powerful than any minister,” he said

Meanwhile, the federal government on Tuesday, June 19, presented a 6-point plan to end the growing crisis between herdsmen and farmers across Nigeria.

The presentation of the new plan was made by the technical adviser to the National Economic Council (NEC), Andrew Kwasari, in Abuja and attended by the minister of agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh, and the Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom.

During the presentation, Kwasari showed that the plan stemmed from the meetings and recommendations by the federal of agriculture and rural development and NEC in 2017.
