Senegal defeat Poland 2-1 in Group H at Russia 2018 World Cup

Senegal on Tuesday, June 19, became the first African side to record a win at the 2018 FIFA World Cup as they defeated Poland 2-1 in the second game in Group H.

The Africans completely mesmerized their opponents from the blast of the whistle till the end of the game at the Otkrytiye Arena.

Before the start of the game, many football fans thought Senegal would join their other African representatives at the World Cup who have all lost their first games, but they proved critics wrong.

The combination of Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Mame Biram Diouf up front was superb for Senegal as Poland goalkeeper made series of saves in the first 25 minutes.

But the Polish defense could no longer cope with the pressure of the Senegalese forwards as Thiago Cionek scored an own goal in the 38th minute to give Senegal the lead.

The first half however ended with Senegal smiling to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.

Robert Lewandowski had a glorious chance to restore parity for Poland in the 52nd minute, but he was denied by Senegal goalie Khadim N'Diaye who was superb in his department.

23-year-old Torino striker Mbaye Niang netted the second goal for Senegal in the 60th minute for them to record a 2-1 win as Grzegorz Krychowiak's goal at the death was not enough for Poland.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Japan beat Colombia 2-1 on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 in their World Cup opener in Group H at the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup at the Mordovia Arena, Saransk, Russia.

Japan’s Yuya Osako got the all-important winner in the second half with 17 minutes remaining on the watch, but the South American could not come back as they did in the first half.
