Some Nigerians have begun clamoring for the introduction of June 12, 1993 general elections into the history curriculum for secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the country, Vanguard reports.
The calls are coming against the backdrop of the 25th anniversary of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, said to be won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.
Legit.ng gathers that a public affairs analyst, Abdullahi Haruna, stated that introducing the June 12 elections into the curriculum would help the youths understand the history behind the event.
He stressed that in order to draw the needed lesson that would help the country in the future, the annulled presidential election and its attendant controversy must be taught in Nigerian schools.

Dorcas Joseph, a lawyer also echoed this point, and has urged the federal government to ensure that the event and the crisis that followed, is taught as history in schools.
According to her, this would help forestall a recurrence in future. She pointed out that the country almost disintegrated as a result of the crisis that followed the annulment; and said the memory of the June 12 presidential election would linger on in her memory.
She further expressed dissatisfaction over the annulment; as she disclosed that she had cast her vote under the scorching sun, in favour of Abiola.
On his part, a social commentator, Diran Adeola, said this was the best time to include the June 12 struggle into the nation’s history curriculum; and urged the federal government to mandate all schools in the country to start teaching it as history.
According to Adeola, this would help in the country’s resolve to get things right.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a former external affairs minister and member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring the late MKO Abiola with the GCFR title.
Abiola is acclaimed to have won the June 12, 1993 presidential election seen as the freest and fairest in the country but which was annulled by a military junta.
Akinyemi, however, urged Buhari to also honour other prominent Nigerians involved in the struggle to actualise the June 12 mandate, while arguing that the award to Abiola was one of the major steps towards healing a national wound.
