The National Assembly has denied that it is plotting to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
The chairman of the House committee on judiciary, Hon Razak Atunwa, during a Channels TV interview on Wednesday, June 6, said the joint session between the House of Representatives and the Senate was convened to debate national issues and to agree on a resolution.

Legit.ng gathers that Atunwa insisted that the session only dealt with governance matters and issues which would deepen Nigeria’s democracy.
He stated: “No one mentioned anything about impeaching the president. We dealt on governance matters, matters deepening our democracy; and we came out with resolutions. Those are more important matters to the country. It was all in the interest of the country, clearly the interest of the country.”
According to the lawmaker, claims that NASS wants to impeach President Buhari are “inaccurate and disingenuous”.
He said: “Some say we threatened the president. We never threatened anyone indeed. We only agreed on resolutions and ascertained the president takes them and acts upon them.
“In the resolutions, nothing like impeachment was mentioned, because we can make laws and ensure concerned agencies carry out their responsibilities. None of us mentioned impeachment in our debate at the joint session.”
Atunwa said the National Assembly will only do what it is constitutionally empowered to do, in order to ensure there is security of lives and properties.
He further said it was unfair for Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris to refuse to honour the Senate’s invitation to answer questions about national security; asking, “Is it a crime to ask for the security of the people? Thousands of people are being killed.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the National Assembly was lauded by the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), for its joint resolution on Tuesday, June 5, to sanction President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the group’s founder, Frederick Fasehun, said the move was a commendable step to protect Nigeria’s democracy and check it’s slide into totalitarianism. He added that it was long overdue.
