The FG has not done its best to fund the force - Nigerian police

- Abba Kyari, assistant commissioner of police, states that most of the efforts put up by the force stem from commitment and sacrifices of officers

- Kyari says that if the police gets up to half of what it requires to function, there will be a lot of positive changes in the force

- He is optimistic that when the National Assembly passes the police trust fund bill into law, there will be a turnaround

Abba Kyari, an assistant commissioner of police and head of the Nigerian police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) recently condemned the poor funding of the force by the federal government.

Kyari, well-known for leading the team that arrested the alleged notorious kidnapper Chukwudi Onuamadike, aka Evans, said Nigerian police officers were poorly paid and only have much less than what they require for optimum delivery.

Kyari said in the comment section of a Facebook post where the death of a police sergeant who was killed by kidnappers was mourned: “Google and read about the funding of Nigeria police and salaries, we physically get less than 20 % of what we need to operate properly." He pointed out that the sergeant was among the IRT officers that foiled a plan to abduct a foreigner in Nasarawa state.

In his absolving of the current Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, of any blame, the assistant commissioner of police pointed out that police officers in countries such as the Republic of Benin, Kenya and Colombia, all of which are poorer than Nigeria, are better paid.

He stated: “Everything is done by managing and out of personal sacrifice and selflessness of some officers notwithstanding that we have an IGP that is not corrupt and have welfare (sic) of men at heart but Government have not given him enough funds to operate and that has being (sic) the case for over 3 decades since President Shehu Shagari regime of the 80s where the police was well funded.

“If we would be given half of what we need or even half of what the police in other countries are given to run their operations and take care of their personnel Welfare(sic) u will see wonders.

"A policeman in Colombia (a country not richer than us) is paid more than 4 times what his equivalent in the Nigerian Police earns not to talk of proper funding of their police operations because I was there September last year and I saw it first-hand,

However, he was optimistic that the welfare of Nigerian police officers would improve when the National Assembly passes the police trust fund bill into law.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Ibrahim Idris, the inspector general of police said the total amount of money that the force annually need is N1.13 trillion but only got N36.1 billion in 2017 budget.

It was reported that Idris made this known on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, while delivering a speech on a bill for an act to establish the Nigeria police reform trust fund and for other related matters.
