Trouble in APC as zonal chairmen call for Oyegun's removal

- Some APC zonal chairmen have called for the removal of John Oyegun, the national chairman of the party

- They claimed his administration has failed to be transparent, highlighting four key areas

- Also, Bola Tinubu allegedly told President Buhari that members of the party had lost faith in the current leadership and an elective convention was the only way out

Trouble is brewing in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as six zonal chairmen of the party reportedly challenged the leadership style of the national chairman of the party, John Oyegun, especially in the handling of the finance.

The chairmen are Chief Pius Akinyelure (southwest), Comrade Mustapha Salihu (northeast), Alhaji Zakari Idde (north central), Inuwa Abdulkadir (northwest), Honourable Emma Eneukwu (southeast) and Ntufam Hilliard Eta (south south).

Tribune reports that they made the allegation in a petition on January 17, addressed to the APC National Working Committee (NWC).

They reportedly accused the Oyegun leadership of lacking transparency and raised four key areas which included the finances of the party, formation of ad-hoc committees, abandonment of the zones and change of party structures.

They noted that the APC constitution had been “disregarded since the inception of the NWC, especially in the formation of ad-hoc committees among others.

“This function, which constitutionally is the sole responsibility of the National Working Committee, has been reduced to the whims of the National Organising Secretary, under the watch of the national chairman.”

“The state of the financial affairs of the party is shrouded in secrecy and lacking in transparency such that it makes it virtually impossible for members of the National Working Committee to authoritatively defend the various expenditure and incomes.

“Particularly, the Zonal Executive Committees have more often than not been bypassed by the National Chairman in many of the interventions at the state chapters without due regard to the grand norm of the party.”

“The continuous change of party structures or officers without due respect and/or recourse to the constitution of our great party is very rife.

“The frequency and brazenness, which the changes take place without due authorization from relevant organs of the party, is intolerable. Kano, Kaduna, Gombe and Ondo chapters are critical examples. Given this misnomer, the structures of the party in the affected jurisdictions have continually been weakened”.

It was also reported that Senator Bola Tinubu insisted on the conduct of an elective national convention as the way out for the party.

Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande reportedly told President Muhammadu Buhari that members of the party had lost faith in the current leadership and only an elective convention would instil confidence.

Timi Frank who is the deputy national publicity secretary of the party said the new development confirmed how he has always felt.

He said: “I thank God they have started realising I started speaking about this since a long time ago, but it is good that they are just seeing it. I have always said that this man isn’t competent; he isn’t transparent in his running of the party’s affairs. I think God is now opening the eyes of a lot of party leaders to know that this man cannot take this party anywhere. I have always said that if they don’t take any action, it will be too late by the time they realise it.

“As far as I am concerned, God has vindicated me. All my positions, everything I said, one way or the other is coming to pass. Our members should wake up from their slumber, it is high time they took charge and see how this party can move from bad to good.”

Meanwhile, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state expressed confidence that the APC will win the 2019 presidency and also 24 states.

Channels TV reports that the Kaduna state governor said this was based on scientific evaluation and not just mere prediction.

According to him, the party was monitoring the pulse of Nigerians and Buhari will win as things stand.
