His words: “We are stepping up our efforts to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country.

“The security agencies already have standing instructions to arrest and prosecute anyone found with illegal arms."

Meanwhile, the current killings in some parts of the country have been described as a plot to detract the federal government of Nigeria from providing good governance to the populace. This is the position of a group known as Unity Peace Initiative for the Survival of the Society.

The group warned those it called detractors to allow the Muhammadu Buhari's administration to impact positively on the lives of Nigerians.

The national convener of the group, Dr Ugochukwu Okafor, said: “It is imperative to note that the killings were politically motivated to act as distraction on the part of the Buhari’s administration which has shown zero tolerance for corruption and terrorism.

"Some people are not comfortable with the position of Buhari’s administration in the area of fighting corruption hence they have chosen to make our country ungovernable."
