Six killed in Cross River tanker explosion

- Six people have reportedly been burnt to death in a fuel tanker explosion in Cross River state

- An eyewitness known as Agnes said the tanker fell into the gutter

- Agnes said the driver and the conductor of the tanker were among the victims

No fewer than six people were on Wednesday, December 13, allegedly burnt to death in fuel Tanker explosion that occurred in Cross River state.

Vanguard reports that three soldiers were among the victims of the incident that happened in Iwuru in Biase local government area of the state.

According to an eyewitness known as Agnes, the troops were travelling in opposite direction when the accident occurred and they stopped their vehicle and rushed to rescue the driver and the conductor when the taker exploded into a bowl of fire and engulfed them.

Agnes said: ''When the tanker fell into the gutter, smoke started coming out and the soldiers who were in a vehicle heading to Calabar quickly stopped their van and went to rescue the driver and the conductor but suddenly the taker burst into flames and they were caught in the fire.’’

She said one of them managed to escape with severe burns and was rushed to the Akamkpa General Hospital for medical attention.

The army public relations officer for the Akim Brigade of the Nigerian army in Calabar said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.

According to him, ''I am not aware of any such incident. Let me confirm and get back to you soon.’’

Meanwhile, had reported that a tanker accident resulted in a raging inferno near the bridge linking Apple Junction to Festac Town on Wednesday, December 13.

Eye witnesses stated that the tanker laden with petroleum product lost control near the bridge and fell, spilling the content which went up in flames.
