On Wednesday, March 22, the Nigerian senate called for the resignation of Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The Senate subsequently declared Ali unfit to hold public office as CG and condemned a letter written by Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF).

Below are the senators that called for his resignation and what they said, according to the Twitter handle of the Nigerian Senate:

1. Senator Biodun Olujimi

Senator Biodun Olujimi who represents Ekiti south senatorial district has said that the action of Hameed Ali is a breach of Constitution and a grand display of arrogance. She also said: "Executive is sitting pretty and pretend nothing is wrong."

2. Senator Abaribe Enyannaya

Senator Abaribe Enyannaya representing the Abia south senatorial district said Hameed Ali made an obnoxious policy and it was because of the policy he was invited to the Senate.

He also found fault with Ali's recent actions stating that it makes no sense for the CG to rush to court to secure a deliberate injunction over his invitation by the Nigerian Senate.

3. Senator Dino Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye who represents Kogi west Senatorial District insisted that the Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali must appear before the Senate in uniform. Then he asked:

Senator Isah Misau said: "If the Attorney General can write a letter to the senate, i wonder what advise he gives Mr. President".

5. Senator Aliyu Sabi

Senator Aliyu Sabi urged the Senate to cancel the collection of duty set up by Hameed Ali until a more robust method of collection can be agreed upon.

6. Senator George Sekibo

Senator George Sekibo reacted angrily and said that the letter from the Attorney General undermines the Senate as an institution and must be investigated.

7. Ike Ekweremadu

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said it is important that the integrity of the Senate must be maintained at all times.

He said: "There's no big deal in asking a public officer to dress properly, people should be proud of what they do

"We as public officers should live an exemplary life and obey laws in accordance of the constitution."

Meanwhile, angered by the refusal of Hameed Ali, the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to appear before them today, Wednesday, March 22, senators are reportedly contemplating invoking a warrant of arrest against him.

Ali wrote to the Senate on Tuesday, March 21 intimating the chamber of his decision to shun their invitation because of the legal dimension the issue between him and the legislators has assumed.

Ali was disgraced recently when he honoured the invitation of the senators because he refused to wear the uniform of the customs service which he heads. He was then asked to report today in uniform.

The Nation is reporting that the Senate has insisted Ali must appear before it as no court can stop it from carrying out its statutory functions.

One Mohammed Ibrahim, a lawyer is seeking the court for interpretation concerning the issue between Ali and the Senate.
