8 urgent issues before the Senate on resumption
Prior to the 2017 National Assembly plenary, the Senate president, Bukola Saraki has said the nation's assembly will hasten actions that will revive Nigeria's ailing economy.
As the National assembly resumes today January 10, here are heart burning issues that are likely to be discussed by the Senate.
1. 2017 Budget
Prior to the 26 days break by lawmakers, President Muhammadu Buhari presented the 2017 budget of N7.289 trillion to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 14, 2016. Saraki has consistently assured the speedy passage of the budget in order to accelerate its implementation. It is expected that the 2017 budget will be one of the topics to be deliberated on by the Senate as it resumes.
2. President Buhari's Loan Request
Another debate that should be given a priority on the Senate resumption is the bid by Buhari to secure a $29.96bn foreign loan. The loan request according to Buhari is to enable his government to raise funds to execute key infrastructural projects across the country between now and 2018. However, this issue has been brewing crisis between the executive and the federal legislature.

3. Southern Kaduna Killings
A lasting solution to the Southern Kaduna killings will also be considered a top debate as the Senate resumes today. In the interest of peace and stability in the country, the Senate will take up this issue for effective result.

4. Poor airlines services
The erratic services rendered by the airlines in the country, both local and foreign airline has not been a good representation of the nation. Therefore, the Senate should see this discouraging aviation services as pressing debate that needs urgent solution for better services.
5. Magu and Babachir Lawal's Case
President Buhari, in December ordered the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to investigate some top officials accused of corruption.
The Secretary to the government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, who were accused of corrupt practices, may likely to be discussed by the Senate today.
6. Made In Nigeria
The Made in Nigeria campaign may also see some legislative backing, since its motive is aimed at promoting locally made goods in the country. The Senate is trying all it can to revive the status of the Nigerian economy, so this debate will not be left untouched on their resumption.
7. Recession
The nation is on its fourth quarter economic recess. In view of this, the activity of the nation’s assembly is to seek quick passage of bills that will attend to the economic mess and take the country out recession.
8. FRC Code which led to Adeboye's Resignation
After the resignation of pastor Adeboye as the national overseer of RCCG, and the sack of the executive secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), Jim Obazee by Buhari, the Senate may summon the Minister of Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah.
The Senate may likely deliberate on the Financial Reporting Council controversies and the repeal of the Corporate Governance Code issued by the council.
