What Is the People’s Redemption Party?

The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) is Nigeria’s oldest surviving political party, rooted in a legacy of progressive and socialist ideals. Founded on September 27, 1978, by supporters of Mallam Aminu Kano, the PRP emerged as a platform for leftist intellectuals and activists advocating for the rights of the common people. Its formation was a response to perceived marginalization within the National Movement, leading to a breakaway that emphasized social justice and egalitarian principles.

The PRP's ideological foundations trace back to the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), both of which championed anti-colonial sentiments and the empowerment of ordinary Nigerians.

During Nigeria's Second Republic (1979–1983), the PRP gained significant traction, winning governorship elections in Kano and Kaduna states. Notable figures such as Abubakar Rimi and Balarabe Musa served as governors under the party's banner.

Despite facing challenges, including a ban following the 1983 military coup, the PRP has remained active, advocating for policies centered on human dignity, social welfare, and equitable governance.
